LOVELESS

Russia/ France/ Belgium/ Germany, 2017, 127 min., feature,

directed by: Andriej Zwiagincew;
script: Oleg Negin, Andriej Zwiagincew;
shots: Michaił Krichman;
editing: Anna Mass;
cast: Marjana Spiwak, Aleksiej Rozin, Matwiej Nowikow

A picture of the ruthless struggle between those that want divorce and a family that lacks love. Boris and Żenia, typical representatives of the middle class living in the suburbs of Moscow, are to split up after many years of marriage. They have already had enough of each other, so they divorce. They cannot find a common language, and their contacts are limited to quarrels, in which they enumerate mutual traumas. They have new partners with whom they want to be permanently connected and start a new chapter of life as soon as possible. They hope that the new  will bring fulfillment to them. Although they have the experience of the past, they remain faithful to the future. An obstacle to setting up their lives again can be a 12-year-old, unwanted son of Alos, who is practically a stranger to them,  and who is  thrown over from one parent to the other like a puppet. They do not pay attention to him, they want to implement their plan, even if it means abandoning the child. Andrei Zvyagintsev's "Loveless" is a strong, mysterious and terrifying story about a spiritual disaster: a drama whose form ostentatiously resembles a police thriller. Mesmerizing intensity and unbearable ambiguity hold in suspense until the very end. It's like Bergman's "Scenes From A Marriage" in the social media era, where the woman no longer forgives and begs the man who betrayed her to stay in a relationship.

Awards: Best European Photos, Best European Music (European Film Awards 2017); Jury Award (Cannes 2017); The Main Award (London Film Festival, 2017); Grand Prix (International Cinephile Society Awards, 2017); Best International Film (Munich Film Festival, 2017)

THE SEVEN DAYS OF SINS

After the film we invite you for a meeting with a film director Jiří Chlumský

Czech Republic, 7 dní hříchů 2012, 107 min., feature film,

directed by: Jiří Chlumský;
script: Josef Urban;
cinematography: Jan Ďuriš a Martin Šec;
editing: Vasileios Skalenakis,
cast: Ondřej Vetchý, Vica Kerekes, Jiří Schmitzer, Fedor Bondarchuk, Jarek Hylebrant, Anna Šišková, Attila Mokoš, Norbert Lichý, Igor Bareš

This story actually happened in the region around the city of Sumperk in Jeseniky Mountains in May 1945. The disappearance of Agnes (Vica Kerekes), the German wife of a Czech forester Jan Olsan (Ondrej Vetchy) is a dark mystery. She is the only one who knows who and for what reason is looking for her. Olsan doesn’t know that Agnes witnessed something that could have negative influence on the position of power of some of the villagers. She became an uncomfortable witness and she decided to run away. She is running away through the deep woods followed by the most powerful man of the county. The fatality of the relationship between Agnes and Jan can only be learned in the mountains on this thorny journey… It’s the end of the war, times are bad and the Czechs are coming back from the inland to the frontier. The guards are forming and soldiers are coming. Fate brings together the outlaw Jan and his German brother-in-law Jurgen (Jarek Hylebrant) who has just returned from the eastern front line. Both men are looking for exactly the same woman and that is Agnes.
The story doesn’t point out who is German and who is Czech, it only tells the story of people and their attitude in critical situations which could have been solved in many different ways.

IN THE FADE

Germany / France; 2017; 106 min.; feature;

directed by: Fatih Akin;
script: Fatih Akin, Hark Bohm;
shots: Rainer Klausmann;
editing: Andrew Bird;
cast: Diane Kruger, Denis Moschitto, Johannes Krisch, Samia Chancrin, uman Acar

In a second, Katja's life explodes and breaks up irretrievably when her husband and her several-year-old son are killed in a bomb attack. Friends and family try to keep the woman happy and ensure that justice will be done to the perpetrators. However, after some time, when the police are beginning to suspect two young neo-Nazis in the assassination, there is a growing need in Katja for personal revenge on people who took away from her the ones she loved.

Film critics emphasize the precision with which the film story was made. They are also in agreement that the thriller's emotional tension and credibility is due to the creation of the main role. The acting of Diane Kruger arouses admiration. The director's artistry, excellent acting and a high level of performance (photos, editing) made the film engaging and extremely moving.

Awards: Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film; Golden Palm for Best Actress - Diane Kruger (Cannes 2017); Critics Choice - Award of American Journalists for Best Foreign Film (2018); Silver Camera - Rainer Klausmann (Manaki Brothers - International Festival of Film Operators 2018)

I AM JUST PASSING THROUGH, IT’S A FIVE-MINUTE STOP…

A unique film made in the convention of silent cinema, which we have titled with a quote from the poem "Birthday" by Wisława Szymborska in the translation of Stanisław Barańczak. It was made of fragments of German, Polish and Czech archival films, which were realized on both sides of the present Polish-Czech border. Well-known places, outstanding people, tourism and recreation, entertainment, everyday life. ... The oldest pictures come from the beginning of the 20th century (1918-1937). The second part of the film is post-war (40s, 50s and 60s). The materials were obtained thanks to the kindness of the Jeleniogórski Cultural Center and the State Archives in the Czech Republic, Branch in Semily. We used fragments of the following films: "První president Československé Republiky T. G. Masaryk návštěvou v Semilech dne 17. září 1922" (Bratří Deglové, Praha); "Riegrův kraj - Semily" (ELEKTA - JOURNAL, PRAHA); "Kraásy Českého ráje" (Krátký film Praha); "Jelenia Góra, 40's (realised by Victor Werc); "Jelenia Góra trams" (unknown author); "In the Evening in Jelenia Góra (realised by L. Jankowski); "Ceremonial Opening of the Pedagogical High School and Exercise School No. 12 in Jelenia Góra" (realised by Grzegorz Pakulski); Silesia As It Was. .. (POLAR Film & Medien GmbH)
The music for the film was prepared and will be played live by the Chamber Ensemble Struna K composed of: Ewa Antosik - violin, Eliza Kucharska - violin, Bożena Wasiucionek - viola, Małgorzata Golian - cello, Krzysztof Kucharski - double bass. The STRUNA K Chamber Ensemble is formed by a group of classical instrumentalists whose core consists of musicians connected on a daily basis with the Lower Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. The band's specialty is the performance of chamber works of great classics and contemporary composers. Musicians often reach for lesser-known and rarely performed works.

YOU’RE A CUTE ONE, SWEETIE

After the film we invite you for a meeting with a film director Aleksandra Kubiak and an actress Elżbieta Lisowska-Kopeć

Poland, 2016, 40 min., videoperformance-documentary

directed by: Aleksandra Kubiak;
cinematography: Krzysztof Gawałkiewicz;
editing: Krzysztof Gawałkiewicz, Aleksandra Kubiak;
cast: Aleksandra Kubiak, Elżbieta Lisowska-Kopeć

A very personal film, resulting from the artist’s experience related to the tragic death of her mother Małgorzata. Aleksandra Kubiak combines video-performance with documentary film: a recording of the meetings with the actress who is about to play the role of her mother, and her ‘being’ Małgorzata for one day. The construction of the film is precise: four meetings with actress Elżbieta Lisowska-Kopeć, conversations, preparations for the role and common performance. Despite the fact that the production was based on a drafted script, the artist did not reveal to the crew the most important thing — the cause of her mother’s death. Thus the interaction between the characters determines the dynamics of individual scenes.

In You’re a Cute One, Sweetie Aleksandra Kubiak is in the process of self-healing. The tragedy, trauma, deeply hidden truth, shame, emotions and longing for mother are revealed. But there is no exhibitionism here; the purpose of the exposure is to overcome fears, and ultimately — to heal. The intimacy of the film makes us enter into an intimate situation. The author leads us form the painful experience (the reality) to a fiction which has cathartic power. The personal dimension of Kubiak’s film and her courage are moving. She pulls the viewers out of their safe position of observer and forces them to reflect also upon their emotions. Thanks to this, You’re a Cute One, Sweetie can have a therapeutic power, pointing to the positive dimension of facing one’s own fears.

BEYOND WORDS

After the film we invite you for a meeting with Andrzej Chyra

Poland, Germany, 81 min.; feature film;

script and directed by: Urszula Antoniak;
cinematography: Lennert Hillege,
cast: Jakub Gierszał, Andrzej Chyra, Christian Löber, Justyna Wasilewska

28-year-old Michael's real name is Michał, but it's hard to guess. At first glance, the boy looks like a purebred German. Blond hair, blue eyes, pale skin do not make him stand out from the crowd. When he stands next to Frantz's friend, with whom they work in a law firm, it's hard to even suspect that they share their origin and the country of growing up. Here is the man who has succeeded. Michael's immigrant's past does not bother him at all. The boy has assimilated perfectly. There is no longing for the country or connections between him and his homeland. Except for one - his 55-year-old father, who unexpectedly appears in the boy's life. Michael becomes Michałek again, which will force him to ask questions about his identity and affiliation. Is it closer to Frantz, or to Africans, who only reveal that they are immigrants by their skin color? The most personal film by Urszula Antoniak, who has lived in the Netherlands for 25 years, tackles one of the most pressing problems of the present, exploring its humanistic aspect, without ideology, without political declarations and without stereotypes.

Awards: photo award - Lennert Hillege, sound award - Mirosław Makowski, Jan Scherman and Maciej Pawłowski; Golden Kangaroo - an award for Jakub Gierszała (Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, 2017); the award of the ecumenical jury (Warsaw Film Festival, 2017); Angela Award for the best cooperation between the operator and director (Kilkenny Subtitle Festival, 2017)

BIRDS ARE SINGING IN KIGALI

After the film we invite you for a meeting with a film director Joanna Kos - Krauze

Poland, 2017, 113 min.; feature;

script and directed by: Joanna Kos-Krauze, Krzysztof Krauze;
shots: Krzysztof Ptak, Józefina Gocman, Wojciech Staroń;

It is 1994. After the plane of President of Rwanda has been shot down in Kigali, riots between the tribes of Tutsi and Hutus continue. During the 100 days of purges, about one million people are killed by extremists. A native of the Tutsi tribe, Claudine Mugambira is the daughter of a renowned Rwandan ornithologist. After the massacre, in which Claudine's father is killed, the Polish ornithologist Anna Keller, who has been researching vultures in Africa for years, helps her escape to Poland. Anna worked closely with Father Claudine, she witnessed his brutal death and directly experienced the naked, ruthless violence that now, after her return to the country, comes alive again and again in the lost flashes of memory. The terror she experienced makes Anna find it difficult to accept a peaceful, slow way of life in Poland, indifferent to the events in Africa. At the same time, however, she feels the need to radically turn away, escape from African experiences, yet Claudine's presence makes it impossible. Both women, deeply in pain, undergo a slow and moving process of gradual recovery and reconstruction of everyday life.

Awards: FIRST LOOK award for the Polish film in the post-production phase (International Film Festival in Locarno 2016); prizes for the best female roles for Jowita Budnik and Eliane Umuhire (52. THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE

Finland / Germany; Toivon tuolla puolen; 2017; 100 min.; feature;

script and directed by: Aki Karuismäki;
shots: Timo Salminen
Editing: Samu Heikkila;
cast: Sherwan Haji, Sakari Kuosmanen, Ilkka Koivula, Janne Hyytiainen, Nuppu Koivu, Kaija Pakarinen

A black comedy directed by the cult Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki ("Leningrad Cowboys", "The Man Without a Past"). A masterful film in which contemporary Europe can see itself (and laugh at itself). After the success of the "Man of Le Havre" realized in France, full of references to the cinema of the 1930s and 1940s, the Finnish master decided to return to his homeland. The film tells the story of a Helsinki citizen, who decides to change his life and open a restaurant. One day, Wikstrom accidentally comes across a refugee from Syria - Khaled. Although the familiarity between men begins in an unfortunate way, the characters quickly establish a deep bond that will be exposed to many difficult problems. Was it only in the fairy tale that their unexpected meeting would be the beginning of a beautiful friendship? In the latest film Kaurismäki does not remain deaf to the echoes of the rising wave of xenophobia and nationalism around the world (in one of the scenes, Khaled talks about how he was beaten by skinhead in Gdansk on his way to Finland). However, the Finnish director is able to break through the layer of sadness in order to offer viewers a portion of uneasy optimism and a contagious sense of humor.

editing: Károly Szalai,
cast: Morcsányi Géza, Alexandra Borbély, Zoltán Schneider, Ervin Nagy, Tamás Jordán, Zsuzsa Járó, Réka Tenki, Júlia Nyakó, Itala Békés

A very original love story that captivates with subtlety, humor and an unusual approach to the topic of alienation. Mária (Alexandra Borbély) starts working as a quality controller in a slaughterhouse in Budapest. She is a young girl, gifted with a genius memory, she is secretive and very introverted. She avoids contact with people and lives the way she does her job: with absurd, surgical accuracy, no room for mistakes or emotions. With growing fascination, it is observed by Endre (Morcsányi Géza), financial director of the company. The two characters have a feeling that they cannot express in the real world. They will manage it only in dreams, where they will meet under the forms of hind and deer. A film about fears and inhibitions that accompany opening up to other people and how thrilling the moment can be when we finally decide to do it.

Awards: Golden Bear for the best film, the FIPRESCI Award, the Ecumenical Jury Award, the 'Berliner Morgenpost' readers' prize (67th Berlinale 2017); Best Actress - Alexandra Borbély (European Film Awards 2017); The Golden Frog: the best operator - Máté Herbai (25th International Festival of the Art of Cinematographers "Camerimage" in Bydgoszcz, 2017), Best Film (IFF in Sydney, 2017); the Silver Grape award for the best film (Lubuskie Film Summer, 2017); Audience Award (MFFaju IFF, 2017)

UNITED STATES OF LOVE

After the film we invite you for a meeting with an actress Magdalena Cielecka

Poland/Sweden, 2016; 104 min.; feature;

script and directed by: Tomasz Wasilewski;
shots: Oleg Mutu;
editing: Beata Walentowska,
cast: Julia Kijowska, Magdalena Cielecka, Dorota Kolak, Marta Nieradkiewicz, Łukasz Simlat, Andrzej Chyra, Tomasz Tyndyk

Beginning of 1990. Although freedom has come, you can still feel the spirit of the previous era. Four apparently happy women of different ages decide it's time to change their lives.  The new world evokes fears, but also sets hidden desires free. Agata is a young mother, trapped in an unhappy marriage, who seeks refuge in another, impossible relationship. Renata is an older teacher fascinated with her neighbor Marzena - a lonely former local beauty queen, whose husband works in Germany. Marzena's sister Iza is a headmistress in love with the father of one of her students.

"United States of Love" is a film about longing for a better, more fascinating life, fear of routine and stagnation. A movie about the choices we make every day and about the consequences they bring. This is a film about the innermost desires that lie in each of us. On the desires of which we even fear sometimes. Not because they cannot be realized, but because they can become our reality.

Awards: Tomasz Wasilewski - Best Screenplay (Berlinale 2016); Tomasz Wasilewski - Best director, Dorota Kolak - Best supporting actress, Łukasz Simlat - Best supporting actor, Monika Kaleta - Best costumes, Beata Walentowska - Best editing (Film Festival in Gdynia 2016); Marta Nieradkiewicz - Special Award Piotr Łazarkiewicz (Hollywood Eagles 2016)

"The General" (USA, 1926) by Buster Keaton is considered by many to be one of the best comedies in the history of cinema.

The plot was based on a real incident from the Civil War, which was the capture of a locomotive from the South by soldiers of the North. The hijackers were followed by a chase consisting of other trains. Although today The General is considered one of the top achievements of Buster Keaton, called "a comedian with a stony face", the expensive production turned out to be a financial fiasco, and the film was also received coldly by the critics. The General was appreciated only after many years. In 2007, the picture was included in the list of the 100 best films of all time of the American Film Institute, and Buster Keaton has so far been a source of inspiration for countless comedians and filmmakers.

Marcin Pukaluk- composer, performer and music producer. He creates music for movies and computer games. He also conducts a rich concert activity. As a great enthusiast of the silent cinema, he rides around the Polish art cinemas, playing séances with live music.

Singing is about the strength of sirens, and working with sound under their spell is a perverse dream of many musicians. Meeting with the mermaid is a meeting with oneself, with the most sensitive and delicate, and at the same time subject to self-censorship fragment of your own, hidden self. Let it be a concert - liberation: from the yoke of conventions, genres, habits or expectations. Let it be a concert - a hybrid, just like a mermaid is a hybrid. Look siren in the eyes and listen to her. Listening to her, let us listen to ourselves. Let us be seduced by the polyphony of human voices, cello, ocean dwellers.
